The FT3000 series overspeed protection system is typically used to prevent large land-based turbines from overspeeding and landing in the next town. Swiss-based JAQUET AG has now gone a step further and qualified a dedicated version, the FT3900, for naval applications.

This involved putting the unit through an extensive environmental test program to MIL standards including Dry heat, Damp heat, Pressure, Vibration, Shock testing and a wide range of EMC tests that were completely new to a company previously only involved with commercial projects. The engineer who attended the tests reported that the 30g shock test was particularly exciting.

FT3900’s are now being specified for a number of European naval projects including their use in nuclear submarines.
