The original concept of using exhaust gases to drive a turbine that pumps air in the engine was filed in 1905 by Alfred Büchi, a Swiss Engineer. At Sulzer he developed a turbocharger for their large ship engines.
Driven by a constant demand of increased performance today’s turbochargers are more and more used at their limits. Various technologies like VGT, waste gate control or bi-turbos require reliable speed information to keep the turbine in its safe operational range.
